Scale based on measurement of seismic waves,
used to determine the magnitude of an
earthquake at the epicentre. The magnitude of
an earthquake differs from the intensity,
measured by the Mercalli scale, which is
subjective and varies from place to place for
the same earthquake. The magnitude is a
function of the total amount of energy
released, and each point on the Richter scale
represents a tenfold increase in energy over
the previous point. It is named after US
seismologist Charles Richter. Richter scale
